SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: COPS Feeder Wiring & Fire Protection (Part 2) ⚡
When a disaster strikes, normal conduit won't cut it. Article 708 mandates extreme physical and fire protection for critical operations feeders. Let's look at the wiring rules! 👇
SLIDE 2 (PHYSICAL PROTECTION & INDEPENDENCE) Conduit & Separation Rules:
Physical Damage Defense: Feeders outside the Designated Critical Operations Area (DCOA) must be protected against physical damage using rigid metal conduit (RMC), intermediate metal conduit (IMC), Type MI, or non-interlocked Type MC cable (or concrete-encased PVC/EMT).
Independent Wiring: Outside of transfer equipment enclosures, COPS wiring from the source to critical loads must be kept entirely independent of all other wiring!
SLIDE 3 (THE 2-HOUR FIRE RATING REQUIREMENT) Surviving the Fire:
COPS feeders must have a minimum 2-hour fire rating achieved via:
A listed electrical circuit protective system (FHIT / UL 1724)
A listed fire-resistive cable system (FHJR / UL 2196)
A 2-hour fire-rated assembly or concrete encasement (minimum 2 inches with engineering documentation or 5 inches solid concrete).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Notice the strict ID rules under 708.10: nonlocking 125V 15A and 20A COPS receptacles must have an illuminated face or indicator light to verify power, and their cover plates must feature a distinctive color!
