⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Stage Switchboards & Dimmers (Part 2) ⚡
How do fixed dimmer racks and patch panels handle massive theatrical power loads? Let's check Sections 520.21 through 520.27! 👇
Accessibility & Protection:
Switchboard Mandates: Fixed stage switchboards must be listed, readily accessible, and contain overcurrent protective devices (OCPDs) for all supplied branch circuits.
Dimer Protection: Dimmers installed in ungrounded conductors must have OCPDs not exceeding 125 percent of the dimmer rating.
Voltage Limits: Autotransformer and solid-state dimmers cannot exceed 150 volts between conductors unless specifically listed for higher voltages.
Managing High-Density Dimmers:
Feeder Configurations: Switchboards can be supplied by a single feeder, multiple feeders to an intermediate patch panel, or separate feeders to a primary dimmer bank.
Phase-Control vs. Sine-Wave Neutrals: The neutral conductor of feeders supplying solid-state phase-control dimmers must be treated as a current-carrying conductor. However, linear solid-state sine-wave dimmers do not require the neutral to be counted for ampacity adjustment.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Triplen-harmonic currents generated by phase-control dimmers mean their neutral conductors must always be factored into ampacity calculations!
