⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Industrial Process Heating (Part 1 - Article 425) ⚡
Industrial resistance and electrode heating scopes, mandatory listings, and continuous load rules—welcome to Article 425! How does the National Electrical Code regulate heavy industrial process heating systems? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & LISTING REQUIREMENTS)
What Article 425 Covers:
Equipment Scope: Covers fixed industrial process heating employing electric resistance or electrode technology, including boilers, duct heaters, strip heaters, immersion heaters, and process air heaters.
Listing Mandate: Fixed industrial process heating equipment must be listed.
Continuous Load: Fixed resistance and electrode industrial process heating equipment is strictly considered a continuous load for sizing branch circuits, feeders, and OCPDs.
SLIDE 3 (INSTALLATION & WORKING SPACES)
Clearances and Temperature Ratings:
Working Space: Electrical enclosures requiring examination or servicing must comply with working space rules in Sections 110.26 and 110.34 based on voltage to ground.
Supply Conductors: Equipment requiring supply conductors with insulation rated greater than 60°C must be clearly and permanently marked.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always treat industrial process heaters as continuous loads and check nameplates for high-temperature wire requirements—using standard 60°C wire where 90°C is specified will cause insulation breakdown!
