⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Floating Buildings & Grounding (Part 4) ⚡
Flexible floating feeds, 100mA main protection, and insulated copper grounding—let's finish Article 555! 👇
SLIDE 2 (FLOATING BUILDING SERVICES & FEEDERS)
Supplying Permanently Moored Structures:
Single Feeder Rule: Each floating building (like a floating restaurant, office, or dwelling) must be supplied by a single set of feeder conductors from its service equipment.
Maintaining Flexibility: Wiring between floating buildings and supply shores must maintain flexibility so water surface motion and water level changes never create unsafe conditions.
Approved Feeders: Liquidtight flexible metal conduit, liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit, or extra-hard usage portable power cables listed for wet locations and sunlight resistance ("W" rated) are permitted.
SLIDE 3 (GROUND-FAULT PROTECTION & GROUNDING SYSTEMS)
Equipotential Safety:
Main Overcurrent Protection: The main OCPD feeding a floating building requires ground-fault protection not exceeding 100 milliamperes to guard against frame leakage on metal floating platforms.
Isolated Neutrals: The grounded circuit conductor (neutral) must be insulated from equipment enclosures and connected only to the grounding terminal in the service equipment.
Insulated EGCs: All metal enclosures and parts must be bonded via an insulated copper equipment grounding conductor running with the circuit conductors back to shore.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Because people frequently step directly from wet water onto metal swim platforms or floating building ladders, maintaining an intact insulated EGC and 100mA main GFPE is vital to preventing step-and-touch potential shocks!
