SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Ground-Fault & Selective Coordination (Part 4) ⚡ How do you prevent a downstream fault from tripping the main service on a critical facility? Part IV of Article 708 enforces rigorous cascading ground-fault protection and selective coordination. Let's finish Article 708! 👇
SLIDE 2 (CASCADING GROUND-FAULT PROTECTION) Multi-Level GFP Rules:
Additional Steps of Protection: If ground-fault protection of equipment (GFPE) is installed on the service disconnect, an additional step of ground-fault protection must be installed in all next-level feeder disconnecting means downstream toward the load (Section 708.52).
Full Selectivity: GFP across service and feeder disconnects must be 100% fully selective so that only the immediate downstream feeder device trips on a ground fault—never the upstream service device!
SLIDE 3 (STRICT SELECTIVE COORDINATION & EMERGENCY PLANS) Locking Down Faults:
Uncompromising Coordination: COPS OCPDs must be selectively coordinated with all supply-side and load-side OCPDs, documented and designed by a professional engineer.
Emergency Operations Plan: Facilities with a COPS must maintain a documented emergency operations plan covering disaster response, recovery, and continuity of operations (Section 708.64).
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Under Section 708.50, all overcurrent protective devices in critical operations circuits must be accessible to authorized persons only. Mission-critical systems leave zero room for accidental tampering!
