Busways — Scope, Locations & Overcurrent Protection
SLIDE 1 — What Is a Busway?
⚡ RIGID METAL-ENCLOSED POWER DISTRIBUTION
Busways are prefabricated metal-enclosed conductors with plug-in capability — commonly used as feeders in high-rise "stacked" electrical rooms or for distributing power along a production floor.
Four special designs under UL 857:
🔹 Lighting busway — max 50A, supports industrial/commercial luminaires
🔹 Trolley busway — continuous slot contact
🔹 Continuous plug-in busway — max 225A, plug-ins anywhere along length
🔹 Short-run busway — feeds switchboards, limited to 30 ft horizontal/10 ft vertical
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (368.3): mylar-wrapped AND powder-coated busways NOT permitted to be reconditioned.
SLIDE 2 — Location Rules (368.10)
📍 EXPOSED, BEHIND PANELS, OR THROUGH WALLS/FLOORS
Exposed (368.10(A)): permitted in the open where visible.
Behind access panels (368.10(B)): permitted IF totally enclosed, non-ventilating type, WITH accessible joints for maintenance. Space behind panels either isn't used for air-handling, OR (if used for environmental air) has no plug-in provisions and insulated conductors.
Through walls/floors (368.10(C)): unbroken lengths through DRY walls permitted. Floor penetrations must be totally enclosed (unventilated) for at least 6 ft above the floor — and (non-industrial) vertical risers through 2+ floors need a 4 in. curb around floor openings within 12 in. of the opening.
SLIDE 3 — Uses NOT Permitted (368.12)
🚫 WHERE BUSWAYS CANNOT GO
❌ Severe physical damage or corrosive vapors
❌ Hoistways
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless specifically approved)
❌ Outdoors or wet/damp locations (unless identified for the use)
❌ Lighting/trolley busway less than 8 ft (2.5m) above the floor/working platform — UNLESS covered with an identified cover
SLIDE 4 — Overcurrent Protection + Exam Question
⚡ OCP RULES (368.17)
🔹 Feeders: protected per the busway's current rating (240.4/450.8(A)(3) exceptions apply)
🔹 Ampacity reduction: OCP required at the reduction point — EXCEPT in industrial establishments, IF the smaller busway is ≤50 ft, has ampacity ≥⅓ of the upstream OCPD, and stays clear of combustibles
🔹 Feeder/branch taps: plug-in devices need OCPDs (externally operable breaker/fusible switch); out-of-reach devices need floor-operable means (ropes/chains/sticks) — with several exceptions for cord-connected/plug-in luminaires
🔹 Branch circuits: protected per 210.20
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
