SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Ampacity Adjustment & Continuous Loads (Part 4) ⚡
Do conduit fill and ampacity adjustment factors apply to Class 1 control wires? When do derating rules kick in? Let's finish Article 724! 👇
When Does Derating Apply?
The 10% Threshold: Ampacity adjustment factors (derating) for multiple conductors in a raceway apply to Class 1 circuits only if those conductors carry continuous loads in excess of 10 percent of the conductor's ampacity (Section 724.51).
If they carry under 10% continuous load, standard derating factors are bypassed!
Extending Beyond One Building:
Article 225 Compliance: Class 1 circuits that extend aerially or externally beyond one building must also comply with the overhead and outdoor rules of Article 225 Part I.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Understanding the 10% continuous load rule under 724.51 saves you from unnecessary raceway derating calculations on control panels where most wiring operates intermittently or below full capacity!
