Article 392 (Part 2 of 3)
Cable Trays — Installation Rules & Cable/Conductor Mixing!
SLIDE 1 — Complete System & Installation (392.18(A)–(C))
🏗️ COMPLETE SYSTEM (392.18(A))
Installed as a complete system — field bends/mods must maintain electrical continuity and cable support. Mechanically DISCONTINUOUS segments ARE permitted between runs or between runs and equipment (breaks often happen at tees, crossovers, elevation changes, firestops, or thermal expansion joints).
✅ COMPLETED BEFORE CABLES GO IN (392.18(B))
Each run must be finished before cables are installed.
🛡️ COVERS (392.18(C))
Where extra protection is needed, covers/enclosures must be compatible with the cable tray material.
SLIDE 2 — Walls, Access & Exposure (392.18(D)–(F))
🧱 THROUGH PARTITIONS/WALLS/FLOORS (392.18(D))
Permitted transversely through partitions/walls or vertically through platforms/floors (wet or dry) when installed per 300.23.
👀 EXPOSED & ACCESSIBLE (392.18(E))
Required, except where 392.18(D) applies.
📏 ACCESS SPACE (392.18(F))
Minimum 300mm (12 in.) of access space above the tray for installing/maintaining cables — with exceptions for IT equipment rooms (645.5), qualified-persons-only industrial facilities, special permission, and equipment crossings at any angle.
SLIDE 3 — Supporting Other Equipment & Marking (392.18(G)–(H))
🔧 SUPPORTING RACEWAYS/BOXES FROM TRAY (392.18(G))
In qualifying industrial facilities (qualified persons only, tray designed for the load): trays CAN support raceways, cables, boxes, and conduit bodies. Raceways terminating at the tray need a listed cable tray clamp/adapter. NOT permitted for commercial installations — there, conduit must be supported within 3 ft of the tray (or 5 ft if structural members don't allow 3 ft).
⚠️ HIGH VOLTAGE MARKING (392.18(H))
Trays with conductors over 1000V ac / 1500V dc need permanent "DANGER — HIGH VOLTAGE — KEEP AWAY" labels, spaced ≤3m (10 ft) apart, per 110.21(B). Exception for inaccessible trays in qualified-persons-only industrial settings.
SLIDE 4 — Cable & Conductor Installation (392.20) + Final Exam
🔀 MIXING VOLTAGES (392.20(A)–(B))
🔹 Multiconductor cables ≤1000V ac/1500V dc → can share the same tray
🔹 Cables over 1000V ac/1500V dc mixed with lower-voltage cables → must EITHER be Type MC, OR separated by a solid fixed barrier compatible with the tray
🔗 PARALLEL CONDUCTORS (392.20(C))
Grouped with no more than ONE conductor per phase/neutral/grounded conductor — securely bound to resist fault-current forces (unless cabled together, like triplexed assemblies).
📐 SINGLE CONDUCTORS (392.20(D))
Where any single conductors in ladder/ventilated trough trays are 1/0–4/0 AWG, ALL single conductors must be in a single layer (bound circuit groups can be multi-layer).
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 392 (Part 2)
Q: Per 392.20(B), cables over 1000V ac/1500V dc can share a tray with lower-voltage cables if the higher-voltage cables are what type, OR are separated by a solid fixed barrier?
A) Type NM
B) Type MC
C) Type UF
D) Type SE
