⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Spray Booth Area Classifications (Part 2) ⚡
How far do hazardous boundaries extend around open-face spray booths, exhaust ducts, and unenclosed finishing operations? Let's check Section 516.7! 👇
High-Hazard Zones:
Booth Interiors: The interior of spray booths and rooms, exhaust ducts, and any area directly in the path of spray operations are classified as Class I, Division 1; Class I, Zone 1; Class II, Division 1; or Zone 21, depending on the material.
Sumps & Pits: Pits or below-grade channels within 7620 mm (25 ft) horizontally of a vapor source are Division 1 / Zone 1 unless provided with a vapor stop.
Adjacent Hazard Boundaries:
Unenclosed Spraying: Electrical equipment located outside but within 6100 mm (20 ft) horizontally and 3050 mm (10 ft) vertically of an unenclosed spray area must be suitable for Class I, Division 2 / Zone 2 (or Class II, Division 2 / Zone 22).
Open-Face Booths: For closed-top, open-face, or open-front spray booths, electrical equipment located within 915 mm (3 ft) of any opening extending from the edges of the open face must be suitable for Division 2 / Zone 2.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Never mix the Division system and the Zone system for any given source of release—you must stick to one classification methodology per area!
