⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Zone Dust Cords & Bonding (Part 4) ⚡
What are the temperature caps for nonmetal dusts that carbonize? How do you bond raceways in Zone dust environments? Let's finish Article 506! 👇
Portable Equipment Rules:
Flexible Cords: Must be extra-hard usage types containing an equipment grounding conductor, supported by clamps to minimize terminal tension, and terminated with listed cord connectors maintaining the protection technique.
Uninsulated Parts: Operating at over 30V (15V wet) must be protected by "ia", "ib", or "ic" protection techniques suitable for the location.
Carbonization Caps & Ground Continuity:
Surface Temperature Caps: For nonmetal dusts that dehydrate or carbonize, temperature markings must not exceed the lower of the ignition temperature or 165°C (329°F). For ignitable fibers, the cap is 165°C normally or 120°C (248°F) for overloaded equipment like motors.
Bonding: Metal parts and raceways must be bonded wrench-tight using threaded entries or listed fittings, prohibiting double-locknuts around impaired knockouts.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Equipment marked Group IIIC (metal dust) can be used for applications requiring Group IIIB or IIIA, giving you built-in versatility for multi-part material handling facilities!
