Slide 1 — Hook "You know what counts as an electrode — now how do you actually install them correctly?"
Slide 2 — Rod/pipe/plate installation basics
Free of nonconductive coatings (paint/enamel).
Embedded below the permanent moisture level where practicable.
A SINGLE rod/pipe/plate electrode needs a supplemental electrode UNLESS it tests at 25 ohms or less resistance to earth.
Multiple rod/pipe/plate electrodes must be at least 6 ft apart from each other.
Slide 3 — Depth & spacing specifics
Rod/pipe electrodes: driven vertically to at least 8 ft depth (or angled up to 45° from vertical if rock is hit, or trenched at least 30" deep as another option). Top end flush with or below grade unless protected from damage.
Plate electrodes: installed at least 30" below the surface.
Ground rings: installed at least 30" below the surface.
Water pipe as electrode: can't rely on water meters/filters for continuity, and STILL needs a supplemental electrode.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "A single rod grounding electrode does NOT need a supplemental electrode if it tests at what resistance or less?" A) 10 ohms B) 25 ohms C) 50 ohms D) 100 ohms
✅ Answer: B — 270.53(A)(2) Exception: 25 ohms or less to earth.
