⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Trade Show & Temporary Wiring (Part 2) ⚡
How do exhibition halls and trade shows handle temporary cords on the floor? What are the strict GFCI rules? Let's check Section 518.5! 👇
Trade Show Display Booths:
Laying Cords on Floors: Flexible cables and cords approved for hard or extra-hard usage are permitted to be laid directly on exhibition hall floors—provided they are protected from contact by the general public.
Cable Trays: Under qualified supervision and maintenance, hard or extra-hard usage cords are permitted in single layers in cable trays marked: CABLE TRAY FOR TEMPORARY WIRING ONLY.
Specialized Protection:
Exemption from 590.7: The standard temporary GFCI rules in Section 590.7 do not apply to Article 518 temporary installations, but all other code GFCI requirements (like 210.8) still apply (e.g., water features, food vendor sinks).
Portable Listing: When GFCI protection is cord- and plug-connected, it must be listed as portable GFCI protection (or provide equivalent performance) designed to de-energize if grounded conductors are open, miswired, or transposed.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Portable GFCIs are engineered to safety-trip upon line-side neutral faults, distinguishing them from standard permanent units!
