⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Midway GFCI & Grounding Rules (Part 4) ⚡
Where are GFCIs mandatory on a carnival midway? Why must grounding continuity be tested every single time? Let's finish Article 525! 👇
Protecting the Public:
Where GFCIs Are Required: GFCI protection for personnel is mandatory for all 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere non-locking receptacles used for disassembly/reassembly or readily accessible to the general public, as well as equipment accessible to the public.
Where Prohibited: Egress lighting must not be protected by a GFCI to prevent unexpected dark-ride or exit path blackouts.
Quick Disconnect Exception: Receptacles not accessible from grade level that only facilitate quick disconnecting/reconnecting of locking-type equipment do not require GFCI protection.
Verifying Safety Connections:
Lamp Protection: All lamps for general illumination must be protected from accidental breakage by a luminaire or lampholder equipped with a guard.
Grounding Continuity Assurance: The continuity of equipment grounding conductors must be verified each time portable electrical equipment is connected.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Because carnival equipment is constantly assembled and disassembled across transient sites, verifying EGC continuity at every reconnect is vital for preventing shock tragedies!
