⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class I Conduit & Cable Seals (Part 2 - Article 501) ⚡
Why are seal fittings mandatory when leaving a hazardous location? How do you pour a proper conduit seal? Let's break down Section 501.15! 👇
Stopping Flame Propagation:
Entering Enclosures: Each conduit entry into an explosionproof enclosure containing arcing devices (switches, breakers, fuses, relays) must have a seal installed within 450 mm (18 in.) of the enclosure.
Boundary Seals: A conduit seal is required in each conduit run leaving a Division 1 or Division 2 location, permitted on either side of the boundary within 3.05 m (10 ft).
Pouring the Proper Seal:
Compound Thickness: The thickness of the sealing compound must not be less than the trade size of the fitting, and never less than 16 mm (5/8 in.).
Conductor Fill Limit: The cross-sectional area of conductors in a seal fitting shall not exceed 25 percent of the conduit cross-sectional area unless specifically listed for higher fill. Conductors must be separated so compound surrounds each wire.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Never pack sealing fittings with ordinary duct seal or tape! You must use the specific manufacturer-approved sealing compound poured around separated conductors to ensure the fitting can withstand internal explosion pressures.
