⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Support Areas & Mobile Generators (Part 4) ⚡
Support area GFCI rules, production trailer bonding, and portable substations—let's finish Article 530! 👇
Non-Production Safety:
Restricted Public Access: Electrical equipment in non-production support areas must be restricted from access by the general public.
Generator Placement: Portable and vehicle-mounted generators must be located away from flammable materials, with exhaust vented away from structures and gathering areas using natural or provided ventilation.
Support Area GFCIs: All 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles accessible to unqualified personnel in support areas require GFCI protection (with egress lighting strictly exempted).
Mobile Power Standards:
Vehicle & Trailer Wiring: Must feature an insulated grounded neutral bar, an equipment grounding bus, and a dedicated bonding conductor connected between the panelboard and the vehicle/trailer chassis.
Portable Substations: Units rated 50 to 1000V AC or 1500V DC must conform to fixed substation rules, though reduced working spaces are permitted if operators can work safely and equipment is guarded. Units over 1000V AC must comply with Article 495 Part IV.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always arrange flexible cords in support areas to minimize tripping hazards using nonconductive mats or approved cable protectors!
