Circuit Breakers — Location & Operating Characteristics
SLIDE 1 — Where Can Breakers Go? (245.21(A)(1))
📍 CIRCUIT BREAKER LOCATION
Indoor circuit breakers must be:
🔹 Metal-enclosed, OR
🔹 Fire-resistant cell-mounted, OR
🔹 Open-mounted — but ONLY in locations accessible to qualified persons only
Extra rules for oil breakers:
⚠️ Breakers controlling oil-filled transformers in a vault must be located OUTSIDE the vault, or capable of being operated from outside it
⚠️ Oil circuit breakers must be positioned so nearby combustible structures/materials are safeguarded
SLIDE 2 — Operating Characteristics (245.21(A)(2))
⚙️ WHAT EVERY BREAKER NEEDS
Every circuit breaker must have:
1️⃣ An accessible manual tripping means, independent of control power
2️⃣ Be "release free" (trip free) — meaning it can trip even mid-closing operation
3️⃣ Main contacts that work independently of how fast you manually operate it
4️⃣ A mechanical position indicator showing open/closed status
5️⃣ A way to indicate open/closed position from the remote operating point(s)
These exist so operators always know the TRUE state of the breaker — no guessing at medium voltage.
SLIDE 3 — Nameplate & Ratings (245.21(A)(3)–(4))
🏷️ NAMEPLATE REQUIREMENTS
Must show: manufacturer's name/trademark, type/ID number, continuous current rating, interrupting rating (MVA or amps), and max voltage rating. Modify the breaker's rating? Update the nameplate too.
📊 RATING RULES — breaker must be rated for:
✅ Continuous current ≥ max continuous current through it
✅ Interrupting rating ≥ available fault current (including ALL connected sources)
✅ Closing rating ≥ max asymmetrical fault current it could close into
✅ Momentary rating ≥ max asymmetrical fault current at that point
✅ Max voltage rating ≥ max circuit voltage
Bonus: retrofit trip units must be LISTED specifically for the breaker they're installed on (245.21(A)(5)).
SLIDE 4 — Exam Question + CTA
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
Q: A medium-voltage circuit breaker controls an oil-filled transformer located in a vault. Per 245.21(A)(1)(b), where must the breaker be located or operable from?
A) Inside the vault only
B) Outside the vault, or capable of operation from outside it
C) Directly above the transformer
D) There is no restriction
