⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Assembly Wiring Methods (Part 3) ⚡
Can you run nonmetallic conduit in an assembly occupancy? What do fire ratings and 15-minute finish ratings allow? Let's review Section 518.6! 👇
Standard Assemblies:
General Rules (518.6(A)): Permanent wiring must use metal raceways, flexible metal raceways, nonmetallic raceways encased in at least 50 mm (2 in.) of concrete, or Type MI, MC, or AC cable containing an insulated equipment grounding conductor.
Nonrated Construction: Nonmetallic-sheathed cable (NM), ENT, and RNC are permitted only in portions of buildings that are not required to be of fire-rated construction by the local building code.
Concealed Nonmetallic Raceways:
Specific Occupancies: ENT and RNC are permitted in club rooms, hotel conference/meeting rooms, courtrooms, restaurants, mortuary chapels, museums, libraries, and places of religious worship.
The Thermal Barrier Rule: They must be installed concealed within walls, floors, ceilings, or above suspended ceilings that provide a thermal barrier with at least a 15-minute finish rating.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always verify local building codes regarding fire-rated construction before pulling nonmetallic wiring methods into any public assembly space!
