⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Assembly Occupancies (Part 1 - Article 518) ⚡
Auditoriums, churches, restaurants, and conference rooms—welcome to Article 518! How does the National Electrical Code regulate buildings where crowds gather? Let's break down the scope! 👇
What Article 518 Covers:
The 100-Person Rule: Applies to all buildings, portions of buildings, or structures designed or intended for the gathering together of 100 or more persons for deliberation, worship, entertainment, eating, drinking, amusement, or awaiting transportation.
Exclusions: Standard supermarkets, office buildings, and schools do not fall under Article 518 unless they contain specific assembly spaces (like cafeterias, gymnasiums, or large conference rooms) designed for 100+ occupants.
Theatrical Areas: The production and audience areas of theaters within any building are governed separately under Article 520.
Where Article 518 Applies:
Listed Spaces: Includes armories, assembly halls, bowling lanes, casinos, club rooms, courtrooms, dance halls, dining facilities, exhibition halls, mortuary chapels, museums, pool rooms, and skating rinks.
Partial Compliance: Where an assembly occupancy forms only a portion of a larger building, Article 518 applies only to that specific assembly portion.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Population capacity is determined strictly by the methods outlined in NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) or local building codes!
