📱 EPISODE 6 — Article 376 (Part 1 of 2)
Metal Wireways — Full Article Breakdown!
SLIDE 1 — Scope & Reconditioned Equipment (376.1, 376.3)
🏗️ WHAT IS A METAL WIREWAY?
Sheet-metal enclosures with hinged or removable covers, made in 1–10 ft lengths with couplings, elbows, end plates, and T/X fittings available.
📏 Unlike auxiliary gutters (limited to 30 ft from the equipment they supplement), wireways can run throughout an ENTIRE area.
🚫 Reconditioned wireways AND reconditioned associated fittings are NOT permitted to be installed (376.3(B)).
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted & Not Permitted (376.10, 376.12)
✅ WHERE YOU CAN USE THEM
1️⃣ Exposed work
2️⃣ Hazardous (classified) locations — as permitted by other articles
3️⃣ Wet locations — if listed for the purpose
4️⃣ Concealed spaces, as an extension passing transversely through a wall — if the in-wall section is unbroken and conductors remain accessible on BOTH sides
⛔ WHERE YOU CAN'T USE THEM
1️⃣ Subject to severe physical damage
2️⃣ Subject to severe corrosive environments
SLIDE 3 — Conductors: Parallel, Size, Number & Ampacity (376.20, 376.21, 376.22)
🔗 PARALLEL CONDUCTORS (376.20)
Single conductor cables run in parallel per 310.10(G) → no more than ONE conductor per phase/neutral/grounded conductor per group (prevents current imbalance from inductive reactance).
📏 SIZE LIMIT (376.21)
No conductor larger than the wireway is designed for.
📊 FILL & AMPACITY (376.22)
🔹 Combined cross-sectional area of conductors/cables ≤ 20% of the wireway's interior cross-sectional area
🔹 310.15(C)(1) adjustment factors apply ONLY when current-carrying conductors exceed 30 at any cross section (signaling/starting-duty motor control conductors don't count as current-carrying)
SLIDE 4 — Insulated Conductors: Deflection & Pull Boxes (376.23) + Final Exam
📐 DEFLECTED CONDUCTORS (376.23(A))
Where conductors are deflected (at ends, where raceways/cables enter/leave, or the wireway direction changes more than 30°) → one-wire-per-terminal dimensions from Table 312.9(A) apply.
🎣 USED AS A PULL BOX (376.23(B))
For insulated conductors 4 AWG or larger pulled through: distance between entries enclosing the same conductor must meet 314.28(A)(1) for straight pulls / (A)(2) for angle pulls — use the minimum trade size raceway equivalent when transposing cable size.
🧠 FINAL EXAM QUESTION FOR ARTICLE 376 (Part 1)
Q: Per 376.22(A), the combined cross-sectional area of conductors/cables in a metal wireway shall not exceed what percentage of the interior cross-sectional area?
A) 20%
B) 30%
C) 40%
D) 75%
