Rigid PVC Conduit — Scope & Uses Permitted
SLIDE 1 — What Is PVC Conduit?
🔧 THE NONMETALLIC WORKHORSE
Article 352 covers Rigid Polyvinyl Chloride Conduit (PVC). Two main schedules:
🔹 Schedule 40 — suitable for underground, aboveground, indoor, outdoor — NOT subject to physical damage
🔹 Schedule 80 — thicker walls, suitable where subject to physical damage
🔹 Types A and EB — intended specifically for underground installations
⚠️ Cold weather note: extreme cold can make nonmetallic conduits brittle and more susceptible to physical damage.
📋 Listing (352.2): PVC conduit, factory elbows, and fittings — all listed.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (352.3): PVC conduit, elbows, and fittings are NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted, Part 1 (352.10(A)–(F))
✅ WHERE PVC CAN GO
✅ Concealed — walls, floors, ceilings
✅ Encased in concrete
✅ Severe corrosive influences (per 300.8) — where chemicals match the material's approval
✅ Cinder fill
✅ Wet locations (dairies, laundries, canneries, frequently-washed walls) — the ENTIRE system (including boxes/fittings) must prevent water entry; supports/bolts/straps must be corrosion-resistant
✅ Dry and damp locations (not prohibited elsewhere)
SLIDE 3 — Uses Permitted, Part 2 (352.10(G)–(K))
✅ MORE PERMITTED USES
✅ Exposed work
✅ Underground — direct burial AND encased in concrete (see 300.7, 305.15 for burial depth requirements)
✅ Support of nonmetallic conduit bodies — but ONLY sized to the largest entering raceway trade size, and these bodies CANNOT support luminaires/equipment or contain devices beyond splicing (110.14(B)/314.16(C)(2))
✅ Higher-temp-rated conductors CAN be used inside PVC — as long as they don't OPERATE above PVC's listed temp rating
✅ Where subject to physical damage — but ONLY Schedule 80 PVC (conduit, elbows, AND fittings)
SLIDE 4 — Uses NOT Permitted + Exam Question
🚫 USES NOT PERMITTED (352.12)
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless another article permits)
❌ Supporting luminaires/equipment NOT covered in 352.10(I)
❌ Subject to physical damage — EXCEPT as permitted in 352.10(K) (Schedule 80)
❌ Ambient temps EXCEEDING 50°C (122°F), unless listed otherwise
❌ Theaters/similar locations (except per 518.6 and 520.5)
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
