SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Information Technology Equipment (Part 1 - Scope & Raised Floors) ⚡
Data centers, computer rooms, and server racks—welcome to Article 645. When does a server room qualify for relaxed wiring methods under raised floors? Let's break down the rules! 👇
Unlocking Article 645:
Restricted Scope: Applies only to ITE equipment, power wiring, and interconnecting cables located within a dedicated Information Technology Equipment room.
The 6 Conditions: To use Article 645's relaxed wiring rules (like running certain data and power cables under raised floors without rigid conduit), the ITE room must comply with NFPA 75 fire protection, be accessible only to authorized personnel, have dedicated HVAC with smoke dampers, and use listed ITE equipment.
Cables & Cords in Plenum Spaces:
Supply Cords: Listed ITE power-supply cords are permitted up to 4.5 m (15 ft) in length.
Under-Floor Cables: Where the raised floor space is protected by an automatic fire suppression system, CMP, CMR, and CM general-purpose cables are permitted. If unprotected, only plenum-rated (CMP) cables are allowed!
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Under Section 640/645 rules, power-supply cords and listed ITE interconnecting cables run beneath raised floors do not need to be physically strapped and secured in place like standard building wire!
