⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Anesthetizing Locations & Isolated Power (Part 4) ⚡
Flammable anesthetic classifications, X-ray equipment sizing, and Line Isolation Monitors—let's finish Article 517! 👇
Hazardous Boundaries & Isolated Power:
Class I, Division 1 Zones: Where flammable anesthetics are used, the entire area up to 1.52 m (5 ft) above the floor is a Class I, Division 1 location. Storage locations are Division 1 from floor to ceiling.
Isolated Power Systems (IPS): Power circuits in flammable anesthetizing locations must be isolated from distribution systems via an isolation transformer.
Monitoring Hazard Currents:
Line Isolation Monitor (LIM): Must continually monitor total hazard current, keeping a green light on when adequately isolated. An audible and red visual alarm must trigger when total hazard current reaches 5 mA.
Diagnostic Imaging Equipment: Branch-circuit ampacity and OCPD ratings for X-ray and imaging equipment must be at least 50 percent of the momentary rating or 100 percent of the long-time rating, whichever is greater.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Wire-pulling compounds that increase the dielectric constant are strictly prohibited on secondary conductors of isolated power supplies to prevent excessive leakage current!
