⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Farm Enclosures & GFCI Rules (Part 2) ⚡
Dusttight enclosures, flexible connections, and surprising GFCI exemptions in damp animal areas—let's check Sections 547.22 through 547.28! 👇
Defending Against Dust and Moisture:
Dusttight Design: Enclosures, boxes, and fittings in dusty areas must minimize dust entry and feature no openings through which dust can enter.
Wet Locations: Equipment in wet washdown areas must be listed for use in wet locations.
Corrosion Resistance: Enclosures must feature corrosion resistance properties suitable for damp, wet, or vapor-heavy conditions (note that aluminum and magnetic ferrous materials can corrode quickly in farm environments).
Flexible Links & Rodent Guards:
Permitted Flex: Dusttight flexible connectors, LFMC, LFNC, or hard-usage flexible cords with dusttight connectors.
Concealed Cable Ban: Nonmetallic cables are prohibited from being concealed within walls and ceilings of offices, lunchrooms, or ancillary areas contiguous with livestock confinement zones due to rodent damage.
Underground EGCs: Separate equipment grounding conductors installed underground must be insulated.
Where GFCIs Are NOT Required:
GFCI protection is not required for 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in: (1) areas requiring an equipotential plane, (2) outdoors, (3) damp or wet locations, and (4) dirt confinement areas for livestock.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Insulating underground EGCs in farm runs protects against aggressive soil corrosion and stray voltage!
