⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Hangar Wiring Methods & Underground Runs (Part 3) ⚡
What raceways are permitted above aircraft wings? How do you run underground conduit into a hangar pit? Let's review Sections 513.7 and 513.8! 👇
Protecting Overhead Spaces:
Fixed Wiring Methods: All fixed wiring outside Class I locations must be installed in metal raceways or Type MI, TC, or MC cable.
Arcing Equipment: Equipment less than 3.0 m (10 ft) above aircraft wings and engine enclosures that may produce arcs or sparks (such as switches or motors) must be totally enclosed to prevent hot particles from escaping.
Lampholders: Metal-shell, fiber-lined lampholders are strictly prohibited for fixed incandescent lighting.
Emerging from Below Grade:
Underground Methods: Permitted methods include threaded RMC, IMC, Type MI cable, or buried nonmetallic conduit (PVC, RTRC, HDPE) under at least 2 feet of cover. Nonmetallic runs must transition to RMC/IMC for the last 2 feet to emergence with an equipment grounding conductor.
Conduit Seals: Any raceway below a Class I, Division 1 or 2 location must be sealed within 3.05 m (10 ft) of the point of emergence above grade, with no fittings between the seal and grade.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Underground vaults, pits, and ducts in hangars are automatically treated as Class I, Division 1 locations, requiring proper drainage and strict conduit sealing rules upon emergence!
