High Density Polyethylene Conduit (HDPE)
SLIDE 1 — What Is HDPE Conduit?
🌍 THE UNDERGROUND-ONLY CONDUIT
HDPE conduit is commonly installed with a directional boring machine or trencher OUTSIDE a building — but that installation method does NOT exempt it from the burial depth requirements in 300.7.
Comes in discrete lengths OR continuous lengths from a reel — great for long underground runs without couplings.
📋 Listing (353.2): HDPE conduit AND its fittings — both listed.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (353.3): HDPE conduit and fittings are NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — Uses Permitted (353.10)
✅ WHERE HDPE CAN GO
✅ Discrete lengths OR continuous reel lengths
✅ Severe corrosive influences (per 300.8) — where the conduit is listed for those chemicals
✅ Cinder fill
✅ Direct burial in earth OR concrete
✅ ABOVE ground — but ONLY when encased in at least 2 in. (50mm) of concrete (and not otherwise prohibited)
✅ Higher-temp-rated conductors/cables CAN be used inside — as long as they don't OPERATE above HDPE's listed temp rating
SLIDE 3 — Uses NOT Permitted (353.12)
🚫 STRICTLY AN UNDERGROUND PRODUCT
❌ Exposed (unless encased in the 2 in. concrete noted above)
❌ WITHIN a building — at all
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless another article permits)
❌ Ambient temps exceeding 50°C (122°F), unless listed otherwise
📌 Big takeaway: HDPE is fundamentally an underground/direct-burial conduit. It does NOT belong inside buildings or as general exposed wiring — that's PVC or metal conduit territory.
SLIDE 4 — Sizing, Bends, Construction + Exam Question
📏 SIZE LIMITS (353.20)
Minimum: trade size ½. Maximum: trade size 6 — with the SAME exception structure as PVC (no aboveground portion, backfilled per 300.7(F), avoids Class I/Zone 0-1-2 hazardous locations, fill within Chapter 9 Table 1 limits).
🔄 BENDS (353.24)
Manual bending permitted (no auxiliary equipment) — bend radius per Table 354.24(A). For trade sizes 5 and 6, follow MANUFACTURER specifications instead.
🔗 JOINTS (353.48)
Made by an approved method — HDPE typically uses heat fusion, electrofusion, or mechanical fittings.
🏗️ CONSTRUCTION (353.100)
Must resist moisture and chemical atmospheres, sufficient strength for handling/installation abuse. Direct burial WITHOUT concrete encasement also needs to withstand continued post-install loading.
🏷️ MARKING (353.120): every 10 ft (3m) per 110.21, including material type.
