2026 NEC References: 230.82, 230.90–230.95
The final section of our Article 230 series looks at what can be connected on the supply side of the service disconnect and the service overcurrent protection requirements.
Only specifically permitted equipment can be connected on the supply side of the service disconnect.
Examples include:
Cable limiters
Meters and meter sockets
Properly rated meter disconnect switches
Meter-mounted transfer switches
Instrument transformers
Impedance shunts
Load-management equipment
Splice/tap devices
Surge arresters and SPDs
Permanently mounted absence-of-voltage testers
Certain control/protection circuits
Each item has its own conditions.
Each ungrounded service conductor requires overload protection based on its ampacity, with the applicable allowances for motor starting, standard OCPD sizing rules, and the permitted arrangements involving multiple OCPDs.
An OCPD generally isn't installed in the grounded conductor unless it is part of a breaker arrangement that opens all conductors simultaneously.
GFPE is required under the specified conditions for certain solidly grounded wye systems and solidly grounded DC systems.
For a qualifying service, the service disconnect rating is:
1000 amperes or more
The source material also identifies the applicable voltage ranges, maximum setting, time-delay limitations, and initial performance-testing requirements.
At what service disconnect rating does ground-fault protection of equipment become required on a qualifying solidly grounded wye system?
Answer: 1000 amperes or more.
You've made it through Services.
We covered:
230.1 — Scope
230.2 — Number of Services
230.4 — Service-Entrance Conductors
230.5–230.10 — Service conductors and building entry
230.22–230.29 — Overhead services
230.30–230.33 — Underground services
230.40–230.44 — Service-entrance conductors
230.46–230.54 — Connections, protection, support & entry
230.62–230.68 — Service equipment
230.70–230.81 — Disconnecting means
230.82 — Supply-side connections
230.90–230.95 — Service overcurrent protection and ground-fault protection
Don't just memorize Article 230.
Learn how the pieces connect:
Service → Conductors → Equipment → Disconnect → Protection
