SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: DC Arc-Faults & Building Rapid Shutdown (Part 3) ⚡
How do firefighters safely vent a burning roof with live solar panels operating overhead? Section 690.12 mandates strict rapid shutdown boundaries. Let's break it down! 👇
Detecting Series Arcs:
80V DC Threshold: PV systems with DC circuits operating at 80 volts dc or greater must be protected by a listed PV arc-fault circuit interrupter to detect and interrupt dangerous series/parallel arcing faults.
Exception: Ground-mounted systems or detached structures not on buildings are exempt from AFCI if installed in metal raceways/cables or underground.
Dropping Roof Voltage in 30 Seconds:
Outside the Array Boundary (1 ft / 305 mm): Controlled conductors must drop to 30 volts or less within 30 seconds of rapid shutdown initiation.
Inside the Array Boundary: Voltage must be limited to 80 volts or less within 30 seconds, or use a listed PV Hazard Control System (PVHCS per UL 3741).
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: For one- and two-family dwellings, the rapid shutdown initiation device (the RSD switch or emergency breaker) must be located at a readily accessible outdoor location so first responders can kill array voltage instantly!
