SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Sign Grounding & Wet Locations (Part 3 - Article 600) ⚡
Metal sign bodies, flexible conduit bonding limits, and outdoor drainage holes—Part I of Article 600 keeps outdoor signs electrically safe. Let's check out the rules! 👇
Tying Metal Parts Together:
EGC Connection: Metal parts of signs and outline lighting must connect to the branch circuit equipment grounding conductor.
FMC Bonding Limit: Listed Flexible Metal Conduit (FMC) or Liquidtight FMC enclosing secondary neon wiring is permitted as a bonding means if the total accumulated length does not exceed 30 m (100 ft).
Surviving the Elements:
Vehicle Clearance: Sign equipment must be at least 4.3 m (14 ft) above areas accessible to vehicles unless protected from physical damage.
Drain Holes: Outdoor weatherproof signs must include drain holes between 6 mm (¼ in.) and 13 mm (½ in.) positioned at every low point to prevent moisture accumulation.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Portable or mobile electric signs used in wet locations must come equipped with a factory-installed GFCI featuring integral open-neutral protection built right into the attachment plug or cord!
