SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Resistance Elements & Ground-Fault Protection (Part 2) ⚡
Heating element securement, nonheating lead requirements, and mandatory ground-fault equipment protection—let's check Sections 427.14 through 427.23! 👇
SLIDE 2 (RESISTANCE HEATING ELEMENTS & LEADS)
Securing and Connecting Elements:
Element Securement: Heating element assemblies must be secured to the surface being heated by means other than the thermal insulation.
Nonheating Leads: Cold leads must be suitable for the temperature encountered, providing at least 150 mm (6 in.) of free lead within the junction box. Power supply leads exiting heating units must be protected by rigid metal conduit, IMC, EMT, or suitable raceways.
SLIDE 3 (GROUND-FAULT PROTECTION & CONDUCTIVE COVERINGS)
Leakage Protection and Ground Paths:
Equipment Ground-Fault Protection: Ground-fault protection of equipment must be provided for electric heat tracing and heating panels (with specific industrial supervision exceptions).
Grounded Conductive Covering: Heating equipment must be listed and feature a grounded conductive covering (surrounding heating elements/bus wires or panels) to provide an effective ground-fault current path.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Ensure your electric heat tracing circuits are equipped with specialized equipment ground-fault protection—this trips on low-level leakage currents to prevent arcing fires without nuisance tripping!
