⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Heating Cables & Radiant Panels (Part 3) ⚡
7-foot nonheating leads, closet cable restrictions, floor GFCI mandates, and wall cable rules—let's review Sections 424.34 through 424.48! 👇
SLIDE 2 (HEATING CABLE INSTALLATIONS)
Ceilings, Floors and Walls:
Nonheating Leads: Factory-assembled nonheating leads of heating cables must be at least 2.1 m (7 ft) in length.
Uses Not Permitted: Heating cables cannot be installed in closets (except for relative humidity control), over wall/ceiling intersections, in tub/shower walls, or under cabinets with no floor clearance.
Concrete Floors: GFCI protection is strictly required for heating cables installed in electrically heated floors of bathrooms, kitchens, and hydromassage tub locations.
SLIDE 3 (WALL-MOUNTED CABLES & PANELS)
Requirements for In-Wall Heating:
GFCI & AFCI Protection: Heating cables and panels installed in, on, or behind walls must be both GFCI protected and AFCI protected.
Height Limit: Wall-installed heating cables and panels are permitted no more than 1.2 m (4 ft) above the floor.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
When installing radiant heating cables in bathroom floors or behind wall panels, remember that dedicated GFCI protection is mandatory to protect against shock hazards in wet areas!
