SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Motor Disconnects & Controllers (Part 4) ⚡ Line-of-sight rules, lockable disconnects, and controller requirements—let's finish Article 430! 👇
SLIDE 2 (MOTOR CONTROLLER REQUIREMENTS)
Controlling the Load:
Controller Ratings (430.83): Motor controllers must be capable of interrupting the locked-rotor current of the motor and must be marked with the voltage, current, and horsepower ratings.
Disconnecting Link: The motor controller can serve as the disconnecting means if it meets all isolation and accessibility requirements of Part VIII.
SLIDE 3 (DISCONNECTING MEANS LOCATION & LOCKOUT)
Sight and Safety (430.102 & 110.25):
Line-of-Sight Location (430.102(B)): The disconnecting means must be readily accessible and located in sight from the motor location and the driven machinery location. (In sight means visible and not more than 50 feet apart).
Lockable Disconnects: All motor and controller disconnecting means must be lockable in the open position in accordance with Section 110.25 without requiring the removal of a cover.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always verify your motor disconnect is within 50 feet and in direct line of sight—if an industrial mechanic can't see the disconnect from the motor shaft, you need a secondary disconnect field-installed!
