Electrical Nonmetallic Tubing (ENT) — Scope & Fire-Rating Rules
SLIDE 1 — What Is ENT?
🔧 THE CORRUGATED NONMETALLIC OPTION
ENT is made of the same material as PVC conduit but is CORRUGATED, allowing it to be hand-bent with some flexibility (½–2 in. trade sizes use standard PVC fittings). NOT intended for applications needing true flexibility (motor terminations, adjustable luminaires) — it just has SOME give.
Max ambient temp: 122°F (50°C).
📋 Listing (362.2): ENT AND fittings — both listed.
♻️ Reconditioned equipment (362.3): ENT and fittings NOT permitted to be reconditioned and installed.
SLIDE 2 — The Three-Floor Rule (362.10(1)–(2))
🏗️ BUILDING HEIGHT DRIVES ENT'S USE
Buildings ≤3 floors above grade: ENT permitted for exposed work AND concealed in walls/floors/ceilings — no fire-rating requirement needed.
Buildings >3 floors above grade: ENT ONLY permitted CONCEALED within walls/floors/ceilings that provide a 15-minute thermal barrier finish rating. Exception: with an approved automatic fire protective system on ALL floors, ENT CAN be used exposed OR concealed even above 3 floors.
📌 "First floor" definition: the floor with 50%+ of exterior wall surface at/above grade — plus one additional non-habitable level (parking/storage) allowed.
SLIDE 3 — More Permitted Uses (362.10(3)–(10))
✅ ADDITIONAL PERMITTED APPLICATIONS
✅ Severe corrosive influences (per 300.8) — where specifically approved
✅ Concealed, dry, and damp locations (not prohibited by 362.12)
✅ Above suspended ceilings — WITH the same 15-min thermal barrier rule (Exception: sprinklered buildings even above 3 floors)
✅ Encased in poured concrete floors/ceilings/walls/slabs
✅ Embedded in concrete slab-on-grade — on sand/approved screenings, with identified fittings
✅ Wet locations, with fittings LISTED for the purpose
✅ Trade sizes ½–1 as listed manufactured PREWIRED assemblies
✅ Higher-temp conductors CAN be used inside — if not OPERATED above ENT's rating
SLIDE 4 — Uses NOT Permitted + Exam Question
🚫 USES NOT PERMITTED (362.12)
❌ Hazardous (classified) locations (unless another article permits)
❌ Support of luminaires/equipment
❌ Ambient temps over 50°C (122°F), unless listed otherwise
❌ Direct earth burial
❌ Exposed locations — EXCEPT per 362.10(1), (5), (8)
❌ Theaters/similar (except 518.6, 520.5)
❌ Direct sunlight, unless sunlight resistant
❌ Subject to physical damage
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
Q: Per 362.10(2), ENT concealed in a building exceeding three floors above grade must be behind walls/floors/ceilings providing a thermal barrier with what minimum finish rating?
A) 10 minutes
B) 15 minutes
C) 30 minutes
D) 60 minutes
