SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Switch Enclosures & Backfeed (Part 2) ⚡
Weatherproof covers, tub/shower bans, and backfeed warning labels—let's check Sections 404.5 through 404.8! 👇
SLIDE 2 (ENCLOSURES & WET LOCATIONS)
Protecting Switches from the Elements:
Externally Operable: Switches and circuit breakers must be externally operable and mounted in enclosures listed for the intended use (unless mounted on open-face switchboards or guarded per 110.27).
Damp and Wet Locations: Surface-mounted switches require weatherproof enclosures; flush-mounted switches need weatherproof covers.
Tub/Shower Spaces: Switches shall not be installed within tub or shower spaces unless part of a listed assembly.
SLIDE 3 (BACKFEED HAZARDS & CONNECTIONS)
Safe Termination Practices:
De-energized Terminals: Switches must be connected so that load-side terminals are de-energized when the switch is open.
Backfeed Exception: Where connected to inherent power sources (generators, PV systems, batteries), if load terminals remain energized when open, permanent warning labels reading "WARNING — LOAD SIDE TERMINALS MAY BE ENERGIZED BY BACKFEED" must be installed.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Always test for voltage on both sides of a safety switch before servicing—distributed energy and backfeed sources can leave load terminals hot even when the handle is thrown open!
