SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Audio Systems (Part 1 - Scope & Cable Support) ⚡
PA systems, background music in commercial retail, school intercoms, and electronic musical instruments—welcome to Article 640. How does the Code regulate audio signal wiring? Let's break down the basics! 👇
Audio Signal Generation & Reproduction:
Covered Equipment: Covers audio signal generation, recording, processing, amplification, reproduction, sound distribution, public address, speech input, and electronic instruments. (Note: Fire and burglary alarm systems are excluded).
Mechanical Execution: Surface-mounted audio cables on ceilings and sidewalls must be secured cleanly using straps, staples, or cable ties without damaging the insulation.
No Using Drop-Ceiling Wires:
Independent Support Required: Cables installed above suspended ceilings cannot use the ceiling grid support wires as a wiring support method.
An independent support system (such as dedicated ceiling drop wires secured to the building structure) must be installed for Article 640 audio cables per Section 300.13.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Under Section 640.6(B), abandoned audio distribution cables in accessible building spaces must be removed. If identified for future use, they must be tagged with dates and intended use!
