Slide 1 — Hook "Today: keeping metal raceways electrically continuous, and the suspended-ceiling support rules — now split by fire-rated vs. non-fire-rated assemblies."
Slide 2 — 305.20 Electrical continuity
Metal raceways/cable armor/enclosures must be metallically joined into ONE continuous conductor, connected to all boxes/fittings/cabinets, for effective electrical continuity.
Raceways/cable assemblies must be mechanically secured to boxes/fittings/cabinets/enclosures unless specifically permitted otherwise.
Exception: isolated equipment enclosures per 250.96(B) don't need to be metallically joined.
Slide 3 — 305.21 Securing & supporting
(A) Raceways/cable assemblies/boxes/cabinets/fittings must be securely fastened in place.
(B) Suspended ceilings: support wires that DON'T provide secure support can't be the sole support. Properly installed independent support wires (secured at BOTH ends, installed IN ADDITION to ceiling grid wires) ARE allowed as sole support. Cables/raceways can never be supported by the ceiling grid itself.
(B)(1) Fire-rated assemblies: wiring in the cavity needs INDEPENDENT support, distinguishable from the fire-rated design's own wires by color/tagging — exception for wiring/equipment tested as part of that fire-rated assembly.
(B)(2) Non-fire-rated assemblies: same independent-support principle, with distinguishable independent wires if used.
(C) Cable wiring methods can NEVER be used to support other cables, raceways, or nonelectrical equipment.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "In a fire-rated ceiling assembly, can wiring be secured directly to the assembly's own ceiling support wires?" A) Yes, always B) No — independent, distinguishable support is required (with a narrow tested-assembly exception) C) Only for conduit under 1 in. trade size D) Only with AHJ approval on a case-by-case basis
✅ Answer: B — 305.21(B)(1): independent support, distinguishable from the fire-rated design, is required.
