⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Essential Electrical Systems (Part 3) ⚡
Life Safety, Critical, and Equipment branches—how are hospital emergency power systems structured? Let's review Sections 517.25 through 517.35! 👇
The Three Hospital Branches:
Life Safety Branch: Powers egress lighting, exit signs, fire alarms, medical gas alarms, and generator accessories. Must restore power within 10 seconds.
Critical Branch: Supplies task illumination and select receptacles in operating rooms, ICUs, emergency rooms, and nurse stations. Must also restore power within 10 seconds.
Equipment Branch: Supplies delayed-automatic loads like HVAC ventilation, central suction, and smoke control systems.
Protecting Critical Feeders:
Strict Raceway Rules: Life safety and critical branch wiring must be mechanically protected using nonflexible metal raceways, Type MI cable, RTRC marked with suffix -XW, or Schedule 80 PVC.
Selective Coordination: Overcurrent protective devices serving the essential electrical system must be fully coordinated for faults extending beyond 0.1 seconds to prevent total power outages.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Life safety and critical branch raceways and cables must be field-marked as components of the EES at intervals not exceeding 7.6 m (25 ft)!
