2026 NEC Reference: 230.40
The general rule limits what each service drop, set of overhead or underground service conductors, or service lateral can supply.
Each service drop, set of overhead or underground service conductors, or service lateral generally supplies:
ONE set of service-entrance conductors.
But there are exceptions.
Multi-occupancy buildings can have arrangements where individual occupancies or occupancy groups receive their own set.
Where the number of service disconnects exceeds six, identification plaques are required at the appropriate locations.
Additional arrangements can apply to:
Two through six grouped service disconnects
One-family dwellings and accessory structures
Multifamily/multi-occupancy buildings
Certain supply-side-connected systems
Can a single-family dwelling's service drop supply separate service-entrance conductor sets to both the house and a detached garage?
Answer: Yes.
The applicable exception permits this arrangement.
Don't automatically assume:
One service drop = one physical set of entrance conductors.
Always check the exceptions in 230.40.
