SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Wind Disconnects & Emergency Shutdown (Part 3) ⚡
Where must the external dwelling disconnect be located for a wind turbine? How do you safely park a turbine for maintenance? Let's break down Sections 694.20 through 694.28! 👇
External Emergency Disconnects:
Location: For one- and two-family dwellings, a readily accessible disconnecting means or manual shutdown button must be located on the outside of the building (mirroring solar rapid shutdown rules).
Dual-Energized Warnings: Where both line and load terminals can be energized in the open position, warning signs must read:
👉 "WARNING — ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD. Terminals on both line and load sides may be energized in the open position."
Parking the Turbine Rotor:
Manual Shutdown Button: Turbines with a swept area of 50 square meters (538 sq ft) or more require a readily accessible manual shutdown button to park the rotor or de-energize the output.
Safe Servicing: Open-circuiting, short-circuiting, or mechanical brakes must be used to disable turbines during maintenance. (Caution: Unintended open-circuiting can cause overvoltage damage!)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Never blindly open a wind turbine output circuit during high winds without checking manufacturer instructions. Opening lines to an active alternator can trigger severe voltage spikes and destroy electronic controllers!
