Slide 1 — Hook "Today: the smallest wire you're ever allowed to use, the aluminum alloy rules that came out of decades of connection failures, and when conductors have to be stranded."
Slide 2 — 310.5(A) & (B)
Minimum conductor size (up to 2000V): 16 AWG copper, 14 AWG copper-clad aluminum, or 12 AWG aluminum — unless another code section specifically permits smaller.
Conductor material: copper, aluminum, or copper-clad aluminum unless otherwise specified.
Solid aluminum conductors sized 8, 10, and 12 AWG MUST be AA-8000 series electrical-grade aluminum alloy — this exists because older-generation aluminum conductors had a well-documented history of connection failures/overheating. Stranded aluminum 8 AWG-1000 kcmil in several common types (RHH, RHW, XHHW, XHHN, XHWN, THW, THHW, THWN, THHN, SE Style U/R) needs the same AA-8000 series material.
Copper-clad aluminum: copper must form at least 10% of the cross-sectional area (solid conductor or each strand), and the aluminum core itself must also be AA-8000 series material.
Slide 3 — 310.5(C) & (D)
Stranded conductors: 8 AWG and larger installed IN RACEWAYS must be stranded, unless specifically permitted/required to be solid elsewhere (this doesn't apply outside raceways — busbars and Type MI cable conductors are common exceptions).
Insulated: conductors must be insulated UNLESS specifically permitted to be covered or bare elsewhere in the code.
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "Solid aluminum conductors sized 8, 10, and 12 AWG must be made of what specific material?" A) Any aluminum alloy B) AA-8000 series electrical-grade aluminum alloy C) Copper-clad aluminum only D) Pure 99.9% aluminum
✅ Answer: B — 310.5(B)(1): AA-8000 series aluminum alloy is required for these sizes.
