Slide 1 — Hook: "Two of the most exam-relevant sections in this article — mandatory clearance distances, with actual numbers to know."
Slide 2 — 267.18 Clearances over roadways/walkways/rail/water/open land Up to 22kV to ground, minimum clearances include:
Open land (vehicles/cultivation/grazing) & roadways/driveways/parking/alleys: 18.5 ft
Walkways: 13.5 ft
Rails: 26.5 ft
Pedestrian/restricted-traffic spaces: 14.5 ft
Water areas not suitable for boating: 17.0 ft
Above 22kV: add 0.4 in. per kV (or major fraction) over 22kV to all these values.
Special cases (lake/river crossings, large-vehicle mining areas, etc.) need engineered designs approved by the AHJ.
Slide 3 — 267.19 Clearances over buildings & structures Up to 22kV to ground, minimum clearances include:
Building walls/projections/windows: 7.5 ft horizontal
Balconies/catwalks/roofs/accessible areas: 7.5 ft horizontal AND 13.5 ft vertical
Over/under roofs not readily accessible: 12.5 ft vertical
Roofs accessible to vehicles (not trucks): 13.5 ft vertical
Roofs accessible to trucks: 18.5 ft vertical
Other structures: 7.5 ft horizontal
Same over-22kV adder applies (0.4 in./kV). Pool/fountain clearances follow 680.9; communication wire/cable clearances just need to be "adequate."
Slide 4 — Quiz + CTA Q: "Minimum vertical clearance for conductors (up to 22kV) over a roof accessible to trucks?" A) 12.5 ft B) 13.5 ft C) 17.0 ft D) 18.5 ft
✅ Answer: D — 267.19(A): 18.5 ft (5.6 m) vertical clearance for roofs accessible to trucks.
