SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class II Lighting & Signaling (Part 4) ⚡
Are standard work lights allowed in dusty facilities? How do alarm horns and pushbuttons comply with Article 502? Let's finish Article 502! 👇
Markings & Dusttight Enclosures:
Division 1 Lighting: Luminaires must be identified for the location, protected from physical damage, and clearly marked with maximum lamp wattage. Pendant fixtures must use rigid metal stems or approved chains.
Division 2 Lighting: Fixed luminaires must be enclosed and dust-tight, clearly marked to ensure surface temperatures do not exceed safe limits.
Cords & Alarm Contacts:
Flexible Cords: Must be extra-hard usage types containing an equipment grounding conductor, terminated with listed dusttight cord connectors in Division 2.
Signaling & Alarms: In Division 1, enclosures containing make-and-break contacts (bells, horns, relays, switches) must be identified for Class II. In Division 2, dusttight enclosures or nonincendive circuits are permitted.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Always verify that replacement lamps match the maximum wattage marked on Class II luminaires. Over-lamping causes excessive surface temperatures that can ignite accumulated dust blankets!
