⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Commercial Garage Wiring Methods (Part 3) ⚡
Can you run standard EMT above a repair garage floor? What are the burial depths for underground runs? Let's review Sections 511.7 and 511.8! 👇
Permitted Raceways & Cables:
Fixed Overhead Wiring: Fixed wiring installed above hazardous locations can utilize RMC, IMC, EMT, PVC, RTRC, ENT, FMC, LFMC, LFNC, and listed cable types like MC, AC, TC, and MI with proper fittings.
Pendants: Pendants must use flexible cords suitable for the service and listed for hard usage.
Heights & Burial Rules:
Arcing Equipment: Equipment less than 3.7 m (12 ft) above the floor that produces arcs or sparks (such as switches or motors) must be totally enclosed.
Lighting Over Drive Lanes: Fixed lamps over vehicle drive lanes must be at least 3.7 m (12 ft) above the floor unless totally enclosed.
Underground Wiring: Underground runs below hazardous areas must use threaded RMC/IMC or buried PVC/RTRC/HDPE under at least 2 feet of cover, with the last 2 feet transitioning to rigid metal conduit with an equipment grounding conductor.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Cellular metal floor raceways can only be used to supply ceiling outlets or extensions to the area directly below the floor, and they must have zero connections leading into or through any Class I location above the floor!
