⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Class III Motors & Lighting (Part 3) ⚡
Can you run standard open motors in a sawmill? What is the maximum permitted surface temperature for fixed luminaires? Let's review Sections 503.125 and 503.130! 👇
Enclosure Standards:
Totally Enclosed Types: Motors and generators in Class III must generally be totally enclosed nonventilated (TENV), totally enclosed pipe-ventilated (TEPV), or totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC).
Moderate Accumulation Exception: Where approved by the AHJ for locations with moderate lint accumulation, self-cleaning textile squirrel-cage motors or standard open-type motors without sliding contacts/switching mechanisms are permitted.
Temperature Limits & Guards:
Fixed Lighting: Enclosures must minimize fiber entry and prevent the escape of sparks or hot metal. Luminaires must be clearly marked to show maximum lamp wattage without exceeding a surface temperature of 165°C (329°F).
Portable Lighting: Portable lights must feature handles, substantial guards, unswitched lampholders with no provision for receiving attachment plugs, and extra-hard usage cords.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Ventilating pipes for motors or enclosures must be metal at least 0.021 inches thick, lead directly to clean outside air, be screened against small animals, and be sufficiently tight to prevent fiber entry!
