SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: ESS Installation & Spacing (Part 3 - Article 706) ⚡
Ventilation, physical spacing, and preventing catastrophic thermal runaway—Part III of Article 706 ensures energy storage systems are installed safely. Let's check out the rules! 👇
SLIDE 2 (VENTILATION & ENVIRONMENT) Manufacturer Listings & Airflow:
Listing Compliance: Ventilation of an ESS must be provided where required by the equipment listing or manufacturer instructions (aligning with NFPA 855 standards).
Component Spacing: Ample space must be maintained between components to accommodate maintenance, hoisting equipment, tray removal, and spill containment.
SLIDE 3 (PREVENTING FIRE PROPAGATION) Grouping & Fire Safety:
Proper spacing is critical to prevent the horizontal propagation of fire through battery modules.
Under NFPA 855 guidelines, ESS installations are often grouped with maximum stored energy limits (such as 50 kWh groups) and separated by at least 3 feet to prevent fires from overwhelming suppression systems.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Under Part VI of Article 706, Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) have unique mechanical hazards and shall not be located inside dwelling units! Always verify technology-specific restrictions.
