265.5(C)(1)
What happens when a premises wiring system contains branch circuits operating at more than one nominal voltage system?
The ungrounded conductors have to be identifiable by:
PHASE/LINE + NOMINAL SYSTEM VOLTAGE
at the applicable termination, connection, and splice points.
The NEC permits methods such as:
🔹 Separate color coding
🔹 Marking tape
🔹 Tagging
🔹 Other approved means
And the identification method must be documented or permanently posted at the branch-circuit distribution equipment.
The posting also cannot simply be handwritten.
There's an exception for certain existing installations.
If a new voltage system is added to an existing installation where the existing systems aren't identified:
You don't necessarily have to completely reidentify the existing systems at every termination, connection, and splice.
But the new system must be properly identified.
The distribution equipment must also indicate:
“other unidentified systems exist on the premises.”
A facility has multiple nominal voltage systems.
Under 265.5(C)(1), conductor identification is required at applicable termination, connection, and splice points.
Which is an acceptable identification method?
A. Color coding
B. Marking tape
C. Tagging
D. All of the above
