⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Carnival Power Sources (Part 2) ⚡
How must carnival services and trailer-mounted generators be installed? What happens when multiple power sources feed nearby structures? Let's check Sections 525.10 through 525.12! 👇
Securing Power Supplies:
Service Guarding: Service equipment cannot be installed in locations accessible to unqualified persons unless the equipment is lockable. This safeguards the general public from energized equipment in high-pedestrian midway areas.
Mounting & Weatherproofing: Service equipment must be securely fastened to a solid backing and protected from the weather unless built of weatherproof construction.
Generators: Portable, vehicle-mounted, and trailer-mounted generators must comply with grounding rules in Section 250.34, while units rated less than 15 kW follow Section 445.20.
Equalizing Potential Nearby:
The 12-Foot Rule: Where multiple services or separately derived systems supply portable structures separated by less than 3.7 m (12 ft), their equipment grounding conductors must be bonded together at the portable structures.
Bonding Conductor Sizing: The bonding jumper must be copper, sized per Table 250.122 based on the largest OCPD supplying the structures, and must never be smaller than 6 AWG.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Bonding nearby portable structures together prevents dangerous potential differences if multiple generators or service drops feed adjacent midway concessions!
