SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER) ⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Limited-Energy Systems (Part 1 - Article 720 Scope & Underground) ⚡
Meet the brand-new Article 720! Created to house general wiring methods and materials for limited-energy systems all in one place. Let's break down the scope and underground installation rules! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & INTEGRATION) What Does Article 720 Cover?
Unified Requirements: Combines former Chapter 7 and 8 general limited-energy wiring requirements, bringing consistency similar to Article 300.
Exclusion: Does not apply to conductors forming an integral part of listed utilization equipment.
SLIDE 3 (UNDERGROUND INSTALLATION RULES) Underground & Wet Location Requirements:
Wet Interiors: Enclosures and raceways installed underground are considered wet locations; enclosed cables must be suitable for wet locations.
Under Buildings: Underground limited-energy cables under a building must be installed in a raceway (with exceptions for unlisted outside plant cables).
Protection from Grade: Direct-buried cables emerging from grade must be protected in raceways/enclosures from grade up to 2.5 m (8 ft) above finished grade.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP) 💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Where direct-buried raceways or cables are subject to movement by settlement or frost, always incorporate "S" loops or flexible connections to prevent pulling terminals apart!
