SLIDE 1 (HOOK / COVER)
⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Electric Space-Heating (Part 1 - Article 424) ⚡
Fixed space-heating scopes, mandatory equipment listings, continuous load rules, and lockable disconnects—welcome to Article 424! How does the National Electrical Code regulate fixed electric heating systems? Let's break down the fundamentals! 👇
SLIDE 2 (SCOPE & LISTING REQUIREMENTS)
What Article 424 Covers:
Equipment Scope: Covers fixed electric equipment used for space heating (heating cables, unit heaters, boilers, central systems). It does not apply to process heating or room air conditioning.
Listing Mandates: Electric baseboard heaters, heating cables, duct heaters, radiant systems, and low-voltage fixed heating equipment must be listed.
Reconditioned Rule: Reconditioned space-heating cables are strictly prohibited; other reconditioned heating equipment is permitted.
SLIDE 3 (CONTINUOUS LOADS & DISCONNECTS)
Sizing and Safety Controls:
Continuous Load: Fixed electric space-heating equipment and associated motors are strictly considered continuous loads (requiring 125% conductor sizing).
Disconnecting Means: Means must be provided to simultaneously disconnect the heater, motor controllers, and supplementary OCPDs from all ungrounded conductors. Disconnects must be rated at least 125% of total load and be lockable open per Section 110.25.
SLIDE 4 (WRAP-UP)
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip:
Always treat fixed electric space heaters as continuous loads—size your branch circuit conductors and overcurrent protection at 125% of the total heating load to prevent nuisance tripping and overheating!
