Shields, Grounding & Construction Specs
SLIDE 1 — Boxes, Fittings & Shields (324.40)
🛡️ THE SHIELD SYSTEM IS CRITICAL
🔌 Cable connections must use identified connectors, maintaining continuity, insulation, and sealing against dampness/spills. Bare cable ends get insulated with listed insulating ends.
🔝 Top shield — metal, required over ALL floor-mounted cable/connectors/ends, must completely cover the runs, corners, connectors, and ends
🔽 Bottom shield — required beneath everything too — can be metal OR nonmetallic
🔗 Metal shields connect to each other and to boxes/receptacles/devices using metal-shield connectors. Connections to OTHER wiring systems (power feed, grounding, shield) must go through an identified transition assembly.
SLIDE 2 — Wiring Devices & Alterations (324.42, 324.56)
🔌 RECEPTACLES
All receptacles/housings/self-contained devices must be identified for FCC use, connected to both the cable AND the metal shields. The EGC from the FCC cable connects to the shield system at EACH receptacle.
🔧 ALTERATIONS
Alterations ARE permitted — just use new cable connectors at new connection points. Unused cable runs/connectors CAN be left in place and energized (no requirement to remove them), but ALL cable ends must be covered with insulating ends.
SLIDE 3 — Grounding & Bonding (324.60) + Construction (324.100)
🌎 GROUNDING/BONDING REQUIREMENT
ALL metal shields, boxes, receptacle housings, and self-contained devices must be electrically continuous to the EGC of the supplying branch circuit. Connections use identified connectors only.
📊 Key spec: the shield system's electrical resistivity can't exceed that of ONE conductor of the Type FCC cable being used — the shield has to be a legit current path, not just a physical cover.
🏗️ CONSTRUCTION BASICS
Type FCC cable = 3, 4, or 5 flat copper or copper-clad aluminum conductors, one of which MUST be an equipment grounding conductor. Top shields = metal only; bottom shields = metal or nonmetallic.
SLIDE 4 — Markings + Exam Question
🏷️ MARKING REQUIREMENTS (324.120)
Cable must be marked on BOTH sides, every 610mm (24 in.) max, showing:
1️⃣ Conductor material
2️⃣ Maximum temperature rating
3️⃣ Ampacity
(...plus standard 310.8(A) info)
Conductors also need clear, durable identification on both sides throughout their length per 310.6.
🎉 That wraps up Article 324 — Flat Conductor Cable, Type FCC!
🧠 TEST YOURSELF
Q: Per 324.60, the electrical resistivity of the metal shield system cannot exceed that of what?
A) A 12 AWG copper conductor
B) One conductor of the Type FCC cable used in the installation
C) The equipment grounding conductor of the panel
D) There is no resistivity requirement
