⚡ NEC Quick Hit: Aircraft Zones & Painting Hangars (Part 2) ⚡
How far do hazardous zones extend around aircraft engines, fuel tanks, and paint booths? Let's check Section 513.5! 👇
The 5-Foot Rule Around Aircraft:
Engine & Fuel Tank Zone: The area within 1.5 m (5 ft) horizontally from aircraft power plants or fuel tanks is classified as a Class I, Division 2 or Zone 2 location.
Upward Extension: This classified boundary extends upward from the floor to a level 1.5 m (5 ft) above the upper surface of wings and engine enclosures.
Division 1 Zone: The area within 3 m (10 ft) horizontally from aircraft surfaces, from the floor to 3 m (10 ft) above the aircraft, is classified as Class I, Division 1 or Zone 1.
Division 2 Zone: The area horizontally between 3.0 m (10 ft) and 9.0 m (30 ft), from the floor to 9.0 m (30 ft) above the aircraft surface, is classified as Class I, Division 2 or Zone 2.
Separated Areas: Stock rooms and control rooms are unclassified if mechanically ventilated (4+ air changes/hour), positive pressure, or separated by solid partitions.
💡 Apprentice Pro-Tip: Hangar area classifications depend heavily on the dimensional outline of specific aircraft types, so always account for future parking patterns to avoid costly post-installation reclassifications!
